Laminating Machines

May 16, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

Laminating machines are a great way to preserve your important documents and precious memories.  Machines and supplies are available to laminate anything from business cards to large posters.

Pouch laminators are easy to use and come in a variety of sizes to suit many needs.  Smaller machines and pouches are used for laminating business cards, photographs, or ID cards.  Larger 12” machines are designed to protect standard 8.5”x11” pages, such as menus, flyers, or announcements.  Pouch laminators cost anywhere from $30 to $500 depending on size and durability.

Laminating film comes in a convenient pre-cut pouch.  You simply insert the document into the pouch and run it through the machine.  The heat-sensitive film bonds and hardens as it runs through the laminator and creates a protective covering.  Pouches are available in different sizes and qualities.

Standard pouch film is clear and inexpensive.  Matte film is available with a slightly granular surface to reduce glare.  This matte surface resists smudging and can be written on with a pen, pencil or marker.  UV/UL film is also available to filter out harmful rays and protects contents from fading.

Roll laminators are designed for larger, more professional projects.  Items like posters, banners, or high-quantity production items are better suited for a roll laminator.  These machines vary in size from 12” to 63” wide.  Less expensive roll laminators run the project through only two rollers to seal the film.  Often the project will need to be put through the rollers again to ensure a quality finish.  High end machines have four to six rollers and produce high-quality or photo-quality results.  Roll laminators cost between $500 to $5,000 and even up to $23,000 for heavy-duty photo-quality machines
