How Do I Turn Off AutoPlay for Multimedia in Windows® 7

 turn off the multimedia AutoPlay feature in Windows® 7.

After inserting a CD, DVD or USB flash drive with multimedia content in your optical drive, the Windows Media® Player or any other media software will play it automatically. This is the default setting for the AutoPlay function in the Windows® 7 operating system.

This feature can be exploited to run any program code and therefore, for your computer’s safety, it is best to change this setting. In the instructions below, you can read how to protect your system by turning off the multimedia AutoPlay feature in Windows® 7.

Turning off the AutoPlay Function:

  1. Go to “Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound”.
  2. Click the “AutoPlay” function.
  3. Uncheck the “Use AutoPlay for all media and devices” checkbox at the top of the window.
  4. Click the “Save” button and close the control panel.

  • If you want to set a special behavior for any type of media, select the function from the related dropdown menu.
