how to use the Windows® Easy Transfer utility

If you want to transfer the settings and files from the Microsoft® Windows Vista® or Microsoft Windows® 7 operating system to another, you can use the Windows® Easy Transfer utility. This handy tool provides easy steps to transfer items from one computer to another. It helps you choose what to move to the second computer, such as user accounts, Internet favorites, and email. The utility also helps you choose the right transfer method. To learn how to use this handy tool you can follow the instructions below.

Transferring settings and files from Windows®:

  1. Click on the “Start” button. Type “Easy Transfer” in the search box and then click “Windows Easy Transfer” in the list of results (you have to be logged in as an administrator).
  2. Click on the “Next” button.
  3. Select how you want to transfer data.
  4. Now you have to select which computer is the old one (the one you are transferring data from), click on this option. The data scan will begin.
  5. Select data from the list by checking or unchecking the checkboxes, then click on the “Next” button.
  6. Now you can set a password to protect your data against abuse. Decide if you want to set a password or not. Click on the “Save” button.
  7. Select a location and click on the “Save” button. Once the process finishes (you will see ticks in front of the data) click on the “Next” button twice and the “Close” button.

Transferring settings and files to Windows®:

  1. Click on the “Start” button. Type “Easy Transfer” in the search box. Then, click the “Windows Easy Transfer”‌ option in the list of results (you have to be logged in as an administrator).
  2. Click on the “Next” button.
  3. Select how you want to transfer data. You may be asked again. If so, click on the “Yes” button.
  4. Now you have to select that this computer is the new one (the one you are transferring data to). Click on this option.
  5. Select the location and click on the “Open” button.
  6. Select data from the list by checking or unchecking the checkboxes. Click on the “Transfer” button.
  7. The process of transferring data will begin. Once it has finished, click on the “Close” button.

Warnings:

  • Windows® Easy Transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit version of Windows® to a 32-bit version. If you're transferring from a 64-bit version of Windows Vista® to a 32-bit version of Windows® 7, you can move your files manually or use the Backup and Restore function in Windows Vista®.
