How Do I Reset My Wireless Router

three ways how ro reset wireless router

Many people use wireless routers to share an Internet connection at home or in the office. It is a simple device that creates a network of IP addresses through radio wave technology. Most Wi-Fi networks are protected by a password or permit only specific Mac addresses to connect to the network to keep it private.

If you lose the password or something goes wrong and you cannot connect to the Internet, you may have to reset the router. There are three ways to do this. Each can solve a different type of problem and all three are described below.

Three basic ways to restart a wireless router:

  1. Unplugging from the power source – Probably the most common restart is to simply unplug the device from the AC adapter or power supply, wait a few seconds and plug it back in. This method keeps the settings but reboots the router so all data and information that may stick in the router’s memory and cause a problem are gone.
  2. Software restart – For this restart, you have to be connected to the network created by the router and in the user interface of the special utility provided with the router. The user interface can be accessed by entering an IP address in the router’s manual or by using special software typically found on an accompanying CD. Once there, simply click the “Restart” button.
This kind of restart usually stores the settings or fixes small issues or changes.
  3. Hard reset – This is the last way to try and solve a router problem. A hard reset causes the device to be switched back to its factory settings, which is just like the first day you bought it. All your security and personal settings will need to be reestablished once again. To do a hard reset, find the button on the back of the router and press it for few seconds until the router begins restarting. You may want to look in the setup manual for the manufacturer’s recommended procedure on how to perform a complete reset of your router.
