how you can control the way the on/off button functions

Many home computer users do not use the on/off button to shut down their computers. They may turn off their computers directly from the Windows® interface or just leave them up and running.

Unfortunately, the on/off button may shut down your computer system when it is accidently hit by small children in the household, pets or even you. This can be a major problem, especially if you have unsaved work when the on/off button is pressed. To ensure an accidental shut down like this never occurs, you can disable this button on your computer. The information below explains how you can control the way the on/off button functions.

Setting the Power Button Functions in Windows® 7:

  1. Go to “Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Option”.
  2. Click the “Choose what the power button does” link in the left side menu.
  3. From the dropdown menu next to “When I press the power button” select the desired functionality:
    - Do nothing
    - Sleep
    - Hibernate
    - Shut down
  4. Click on the “Save changes” button and close the control panel.
