Generally, there are several ways to improve the speed and response of your operating system. Some of these tricks are free, while others require purchase. Below is a list of twelve tips and tricks to help speed up your computer so it runs faster and more efficiently.

Tips and tricks:

  1. Uninstall applications and programs you don’t use – You may have installed applications that you never even used such as freeware, shareware, demos, and advertising utilities. Go through all your installed programs and get rid of unnecessary ones to make for a faster PC.
You can find instructions in the “How do I uninstall a program from my computer” article.
  2. Filter applications from Windows® startup – Usually, at the startup of your operating system some applications are launched. Some of them are useful such as drivers and system services while others are not. Remove unnecessary applications from the startup so Windows® can load faster.
You can find instructions in the “How do I make my computer start up faster” article.
  3. Extend RAM – If you have an older computer with an insufficient amount of memory, or it is not the recommended amount of RAM for your operating system, you should extend it. Any RAM upgrade will help speed up your system.
You can find instructions in the “How do I extend RAM memory” article.
  4. Defragment your hard drive disc – Working with fragmented data on your hard disk drive (HDD) makes significant time delays. Defragmenting them into continuous units again can create a significant change in your PC’s speed and make it run faster.
You can find instructions in the “How do I do a hard disk defragmentation” article.
  5. Clean up your hard disk – Every time you work on your computer, many temporary files are saved on your HDD. Delete them. Most of them are no longer needed. Go to “Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup” or follow the instructions in the “How do I clean up my disk and memory space” article.
  6. Get rid of viruses and spyware – Quite often, unwanted and dangerous software makes your computer slower. Install a security application to scan and rid your PC of such threats.

  7. Do not use any desktop background, graphical skins or Aero® – All these customizations and graphical features use up valuable RAM, so disable them.

  8. Turn off indexing – A continuous Windows® Search can slow the work being done on the computer. Turn it off if you can search for files in a different way, this will help speed up your system.
