How Do I Install a Font in Microsoft Windows®

How to install any letter font style into Windows® operating systems

You can find all kinds of text fonts for a variety occasions and purposes to suit your needs. There are a variety of font styles and types available in Windows®, so we can usually find the font we need. If you find your desired font it is usually a “.ttf” file or a collection of files. You need to install it in your operating system to have this font available in all your applications. The instructions below will show you how to install any letter font style into Windows®.

Instructions for Windows® XP:

  1. Get a new font file. For example, you can find one at www.dafont.com where you will receive a zipped file that needs to be extracted (see the article that focuses on the unpacking a zip file).
  2. Now that you have a “.ttf” file, go to “Start” click “Control Panel” and open the “Fonts” link.
  3. In the Main navigation bar, click “File” and “Install New Font...”
  4. In “Folders:” locate the folder where the font file is.
  5. The file is displayed in the “List of Fonts” box. Click on it and then on the “OK” button.
  6. After the font installs, close the window and your font is ready to use.

Instructions for Windows Vista®:

  1. Get a new font file. For example, you can find one at www.dafont.com where you will receive a zipped file that needs to be extracted (see the articlethat focuses on the unpacking a zip file).
  2. Now that you have a “.ttf” file, go to “Start” click “Control Panel” then “Appearance and Personalization” and open the “Fonts” link.
  3. Right-click in the field with the font files and choose “Install New Font...”
  4. In “Folders:” locate the folder where the font file is.
  5. The file is displayed in the “List of Fonts” box, click on it and then on the “Install” button.
  6. After the font installs, close the window and your font is ready to use.

Instructions for Windows® 7:

  1. Get a new font file, for example, you can find one at  www.dafont.com where you receive a zipped file that needs to be extracted (see the articlethat focuses on the unpacking a zip file).
  2. Now that you have a “.ttf” file, double-click on it.
  3. In the Main navigation bar click, the “Install” selection.
  4. After the font installs, close the window and your font is ready to use.

Tips and tricks:

  • You can add multiple fonts by choosing more files in the “List of Fonts” box, then click the “OK” button.
  • To remove a font, you need to find the installed file in “Fonts” and right-click on it, then choose the “Delete” option, and choose “Yes” in the confirmation dialog box.
