The current database of file extensions contains thousands of file types and continues to grow everyday because programmers constantly change and create new files. Sometimes, you may have problems with a file or just need to know more information about it, such as what type of file it is. You can get information about a file type from an online database. This is very useful when you aren’t sure if you want to delete a certain file, or if you don’t know which program to use to open it. To learn how to connect to the file extension database on the Internet and get the information you need, follow the instructions below.
Instructions:
- Open your Internet browser. Then, type in http://www.fileinfo.com/ and go to the website.
There are three ways to find the file extension you seek:
1. In the left pane, you will see the list of file types sorted into categories (Text files, Data files, Video files, etc.). Click on a category to see a list of all the extensions in that category, then click on the extension you wish to learn more about.
2. If you know the exact name of the extension, you can use the alphabet letters at the top of the page. Click on the letter that corresponds to the first letter of the file extension that you wish to investigate and then click on the extension from the list.
3. The third way is to use the search box located in the upper left corner of the page. In the search box, type in the extension and press the “Enter” button on your keyboard. - On the information page, you can see information about the Developer, Popularity, Category, File description and the programs that will open the file format.
- The programs are typically presented as hyperlinks, so you can click the link to visit the program’s homepage.
- The last information displayed (which might be important) is the date on which the information was updated. This information is displayed at the bottom of the page.
