extend any disk volume on your computer

If you have divided your hard drive into two volumes, you can change their capacities even when Windows® is running. This system management feature is quite useful if you want to extend one volume and don’t mind reducing the second. For example, if there is insufficient space on the system volume, you can simply extend it by shrinking the other volume.  This operation only works within one physical drive. In the instructions below, you can learn how to extend any disk volume on your computer to create additional memory for that particular partition or disk.

Extending a Volume in Windows®:

  1. First, back up all your data (at least the important data) from the drive you are going to extend. If you’re not sure how to do it, read the article that focuses on storing files online.
  2. Log in to your computer using the administrator account.
  3. Click on the “Start” button, right-click on the Computer (My Computer) and select “Manage”.
  4. In the left navigation pane, navigate to “Storage > Disk Management“.
  5. Select the drive where you want the system volume to be extended by clicking on that specific drive below the "Volume" column.
  6. Right-click on the drive, then select "Extend Volume." The Extend Volume Wizard will appear on your screen. Click the "Next" button to proceed to the next step of the wizard.
  7. Next to the field that reads "Select the amount of space in MB", enter the amount of megabytes or MB you want to extend to that volume.
  8. Click on "Next" to complete the system volume extension process.
  9. Click on the "Finish" button when the Extend Volume Wizard has successfully extended your system volume.
  10. Close the Computer Management window.
