How to create a shortcut on your desktop in Microsoft Windows®

There are two ways to access a file, folder, application or location. You can go directly to it via the Start button and follow the path to it or you can create a shortcut which gives you faster access. The shortcut is shown on your desktop as an icon. You can create your own system of shortcuts, so you can quickly access the information you need. To create a shortcut on your desktop, follow the instructions below.

Instructions:

  1. Go to your desktop. Minimize all your applications or show only your desktop by pressing down the “Win Key + D” on your keyboard.
  2. Right–click on your desktop.
  3. Choose “New > Shortcut”
  4. Insert the exact location of an item you would like to create a shortcut for or click on the “Browse” button and navigate to it. Click on the “OK” button.
  5. Click on the “Next” button.
  6. Now, you can type a name of this shortcut in the field or leave the original name.
  7. Click on the “Finish” button.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You can change the icon of a shortcut by right-clicking on shortcut, choose “Properties” and in the “Shortcut” tab, click on the “Change Icon” button.
  • A shortcut icon is shown on your desktop with a blue arrow in a white field located in the lower-left hand corner.
