How Do I Create a Hyperlink Text in Microsoft® Word

When you write text in a document to describe a website or a file that is stored in a network or computer, it would be much easier for the reader to understand if he can actually view it. You can do this by having your document contain portions of texts that are clickable links called “hyperlink” texts. To launch a hyperlink to the exact file or website, hold down the “Ctrl” key and click on the link. The hyperlinks are usually shown in blue color and are underlined. This way the reader can recognize the hyperlink immediately in the text. To learn how to create a hyperlink in text in Microsoft® Word, follow the directions below.

Instructions:

  1. Open the Microsoft Word application.
  2. Open the file you would like to create a hyperlink in, or create a new file.
  3. Double-click on the word you would like to convert to a hyperlink. You can also highlight a group of words if you want the link to contain more words.
  4. Right-click and from the menu choose the “Hyperlink” selection.
  5. If you would like the link to go to a file, choose the file in the “Look in” dropdown menu.
    If you would like the link to go to a URL address, type the URL address into the “Address” field.
  6. Click on the “OK” button.

Tips and Tricks:

  • If you would like to remove the hyperlink, right-click on the hyperlink and choose “Remove Hyperlink”.
  • If you would like to change the target of the hyperlink, right-click on the hyperlink and choose the “Edit Hyperlink” selection.
  • You can change the color of the hyperlinked word in the “Font Color” palette.

Warnings:

  • If you hyperlink a file in a document and you click on the hyperlink, the file will automatically open.
