How Do I Connect to a FTP Server in Windows® Explorer

March 27, 2012  |  Difficulty: Easy

instructions on how to use Windows® Explorer to connect to a FTP server.

A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server enables users of any computer network to share files and folders. If you want to connect to a FTP server you must know its IP address and have a login (user name and password) if required. You can use any file commander application or Windows® Explorer (the Windows® operating system default software). Read the instructions below to learn how to do so.

Connecting to the FTP server:

  1. Open Windows® Explorer.  Type “ftp://” In the address bar, followed by the IP address of the FTP server.
  2. You will then be asked to log on. Enter your username and password (if you plan to log on more than once to this server, check the "Save password" box, if your FTP server supports anonymous connections, check the box that says "Log on anonymously").
  3. Click the “Log On” button, and you will have successfully logged on to a FTP server in Windows® Explorer!
