How Do I Change the Time for Automatic Updates in Windows®

June 28, 2012  |  Difficulty: Medium

how to change the time interval for when Windows® checks the update server

Microsoft® continuously improves and fixes issues in their operating systems and all regular users can get these fixes in the form of updates. Usually, the automatic updates function is enabled on computers and Windows® automatically checks for any available updates. Sometimes, checking for updates in a set interval (in Windows® 7 it is every 22 hours) is not desired, and keeping the computer up to date more frequently is preferred. The instructions below show you how to change the time interval for when Windows® checks the update server for any available updates.

Changing the automatic updates time:

  1. Click on the “Start” button and into the search box write “gpedit.msc” and press “Enter”.
  2. In the right pane, go to “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update”.
  3. In the right list of components, double-click on the “Automatic Updates detection frequency” item.
  4. At the top, select the “Enabled” option button.
  5. Now just set the updates check interval.
  6. Click on the “OK” button and close the “Local Group Policy Editor”.
