How to customize single spacing into double spacing in Microsoft® Word

Generally, many lines of text are divided into paragraphs and the way the text document looks depends on the settings of the page preferences and format. If you are writing a document that has a required format, you may need to change the layout settings. This article will focus on changing line spacing which is the spacing between each line of text on a page, paragraph or section of text. The Microsoft® Word text editor usually sets the line spacing to “Single” and by following the instructions below you can customize this into double spacing, or whatever line spacing you choose.

  1. Start the Microsoft® Word application. Open a document with text.
  2. Select the segment or paragraph where you want to change the line spacing.
  3. Right-click on the selection and choose “Paragraph…”
  4. In the dialog box go to the “Spacing” section.
  5. Change the value in the “At:” field to the desired line spacing, or choose predefined settings in the “Line spacing” dropdown menu.
  6. Click the “OK” button to confirm changes.

Tips and Tricks:

  • To select a whole document, place the mouse cursor in front of any line so it changes to a reversed arrow (right-pointing arrow), click, and perform a triple-click.
  • To undo your changes, click the “undo arrow” button at the main navigation bar, or press the “Ctrl” + “Z” keys.
