How Do I Avoid Moving Files to the Recycle Bin when Deleted

July 09, 2012  |  Difficulty: Easy

how to set your Recycle Bin in Windows® to remove files immediately

The initial settings of the Recycle Bin in Microsoft Windows® operating systems allow for all deleted files to go to this folder. The user can then restore them until he empties the Recycle Bin. This is useful if you realize later that you need the file you deleted. But the other effect of this feature is that deleted data still fills space on your hard drive. This could be why you may want to permanently delete all files directly, that way, you avoid the extra step of using the Recycle Bin folder. Read the instructions below to learn how to set your Recycle Bin in Windows® to remove files immediately when they are deleted.

Setting up the Recycle Bin in Windows®:

  1. Display your desktop where the Recycle Bin icon is located (press “WinKey + D”).
  2. Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon and select “Properties” from the menu.
  3. For Windows XP®:
    - In the “Global” tab, select the “Configure drives independently” option button.
    - Switch to the next tab (drive name tab) and select the “Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.” checkbox.
    For Windows Vista® and Windows® 7:
    - In the “Global” tab, select the “Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.” checkbox.
  4. Click on the “OK” button to confirm and save the changes.
