Great Nutrition for Iguanas

August 07, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

Happy family

Iguanas are strict herbivores so give them what they need to keep them in the green!

A green iguana has very specific nutritional needs of an herbivorous diet high in raw, leafy, green vegetables with a bit of fruit.  Great nutrition for iguanas will provide him the digestive enzymes, vitamins, and minerals he would get from his wild diet. Don’t deprive him by feeding him only store-bought pellets on a daily basis. Be sure to feed your iguana many different fruits and vegetables right from the start so he does not get stuck on any one type of food that could leave him in danger of nutritional deficiencies. You will notice these problems if his color is not bright green at some point every day or if he is more sluggish than usual, has cloudy eyes or trouble molting.  Here’s how to make your pet iguana a fantastic salad:

  • Shred some Romaine lettuce, zucchini, squash and carrots. Remember, the brighter the fruit or veggie, the more nutrients it contains so stay away from bland-looking cabbages and iceberg lettuce. A hand-held cheese grater is perfect for shredding your small iguana’s daily meals. Once he is bigger, you can chunk his veggies but the finer shreds help young iguanas chow down.
  • Slice some small banana rounds and mix into his salad. Iguanas just love to sink there mouths into these and it provides them with necessary potassium.
  • Apples and pears with the skin on provide lots of necessary fiber and chewing for your iguana. Be sure to rinse skinned fruits thoroughly of pesticides. You can use a hydrogen peroxide bath or vinegar bath to get those waxes off.
  • Give him some small chunks of cantaloupe. Iguanas love the sweet taste and they’re loaded with vitamins A, E and C.
  • Peas are a bite-sized favorite of power packed veggies to sprinkle onto the salad.
  • Add any type of greens or tops you may have lying around from other recipes like collard greens, mustard greens, broccoli, green beans, turnip or carrot tops.
  • Some yard greens to feed your iguana: dandelion greens, hibiscus flowers, roses and carnations. Just cut them up but only if they are pesticide free!
  • Have grapes? Cut them up and throw them in!

Mix this all up for the ultimate iguana salad. Any combination of these ingredients is great as long as you change it up every day while keeping in mind that iguanas need a diet of mostly vegetables with fruits coming in second place.
